Community Coronavirus Support

A group has been set up to provide assistance to members of the Bunwell Community during the Coronavirus outbreak. Please see the guidelines below for requesting or providing assistance if you are in the Bunwell area.

Obviously these are unique times and the situation is constantly developing so these guidelines are our best thoughts at the moment and likely to be frequently updated so please re-visit this page whenever possible.

Can we provide assistance during the lockdown

Mutual aid groups will continue to provide an important lifeline to our communities during the UK lockdown, and will pose no additional risk, as long as we act safely and sensibly, within its parameters.

The government has specifically stated that those of us who are leaving the house “to provide care or help to a vulnerable person” will be allowed to carry on. On this basis, we are presuming that Mutual Aid groups will be allowed to carry on providing vital support to people in self-isolation or quarantine. Groups  should continue to follow the guidance to ensure you do not put yourself or others at risk in carrying out this support, but otherwise we would encourage groups to continue as before. 

The new rules on reduced trips means that people should carry out multiple errands at once to avoid excessive trips outside, such as doing your shopping at the same time as you shop for other people, or shopping for more than one person at the same time.

This decision is going to increase the anxiety and isolation being experienced across the UK. So offering phone calls and online support to people requesting help is going to be even more important than before.

We’ve already begun to show the world the incredible impact that something as simple as looking out for your neighbours can have in the face of coronavirus. As the situation develops, we look forward to continuing the work of building this network of local groups, and providing care and compassion in our communities.

• Posting of mail

• Delivering a take-away meal 

• Having a chat (within social distancing guidelines of course)

 

How to offer help

In order of preference

• Join the Facebook group ‘Bunwell Coronavirus Support’ at https://www.facebook.com/groups/bunwellvolunteers

• Volunteer to be a named helper by completing this form

• Respond to requests for assistance on the ‘Bunwell Coronavirus Support’ Facebook group

• Planning some shopping? Then let the group know and ask if anybody needs anything

• Collecting your prescriptions? Let the group know and ask if anybody needs theirs picked up

• Drop a leaflet round a neighbours offering help if required. See here for some suggested leaflets

 

How to request help

In order of preference

• Use online shopping services wherever possible. Bunwell Stores are offering a delivery service

• If a leaflet has been received contact the person detailed

• Post a request for assistance the ‘Bunwell Coronavirus Support’ Facebook group. If no response is received please contact the e-mail address or phone 0333 050 9604 .

How to Provide help

Ask them to give you a shopping list via phone call or text message before you go to the shop.

Agree whether or not they will accept substitutions.

Ask if they have any allergies or dietary requirements.

If you’re dropping items back: we suggest leaving them on the doorstep and knocking or ringing. A friendly wave and “Thank you” through the door is allowed!

 

How should I handle money 

We strongly encourage volunteers not to accept credit/debit cards from people asking for help in order to buy resources on their behalf as this is a safeguarding risk.

To reduce the risk of fraud, we recommend that wherever possible you do your shopping and come back with a receipt before asking for money from people in self-isolation.

We also recommend that volunteers not make purchases larger than £30 for any one person or family in self-isolation.

In order of preference money can be received by:

 

  • By bank transfer or paypal to minimise the risk of passing on the virus
  • Cheques can also be used if you have an banking app which scans and deposits the cheque (I know the LLoyds app can do this)
  • You can disinfect any cash you receive using soapy water.
